Renewals

We've had a few questions from new students about renewing items. Here are the instructions from the university website:

"You can renew your Library books up to six times through the on-line catalogue (OPAC) from within the Library or when connected to the University network by accessing Your Library record

You can also renew your books by taking your Library card to the Issue Desk or by telephoning the Library and quoting your card number. If another user has requested a book then it cannot be renewed."

The rules are the same here in the Donald Mason Library. Please do ask if you have any questions.

Perfect step up for readers

Here is a perfect solution for readers who can't bear to give up their collection but are rapidly running out of space -- stairs which double as a bookcase:

"We created a 'secret' staircase, hidden from the main reception room, to access a new loft bedroom lit by roof lights. Limited by space, we melded the idea of a staircase with our client's desire for a library to form a 'library staircase' in which English oak stair treads and shelves are both completely lined with books. With a skylight above lighting the staircase, it becomes the perfect place to stop and browse a tome."

RSS Feeds - what are they? Part 1

The Tsetse Files is one of many thousands or millions of websites which has an ‘RSS’ or news feed. These feeds are a new way for you to find out if your favourite websites have been updated without having to visit the site itself.

You can tell if a website or weblog has a news feed if one of the following logos is displayed somewhere on the front page. Most likely it will be …




… although this is common …





… as is this, but less so …



… or simply the letters ‘RSS’ are displayed prominently somewhere.

To read any of these feeds you must have a ‘feed reader’. The most popular forms are a website in which you list all of feeds which means that you can see all of the updates in one place, or a piece of software which you may have to pay for that works not unlike email software which opens from your computer desktop. It’s also possible to have the updates emailed to you although be warned that since some feeds can have many updates during the day, your inbox will fill up very quickly! Here are some examples of each:
